Training Program Puts Inclusion Value to Work

Central to achieving Newmont’s purpose to create value and improve lives includes developing our people and building a diverse pipeline of skilled talent around the world. Newmont believes that enhancing global inclusion and diversity will improve business performance and create sustainable, long-term value for all of our stakeholders.

Ten years ago, Newmont Boddington Gold, located in Western Australia, signed the Moorditj Booja Community Partnership Agreement (CPA), an agreement voluntarily negotiated between Gnaala Karla Booja (GKB) Native Title Claimants, the South West Aboriginal Land and Sea Council and Newmont.

In addition to acknowledging that GKB claimants have native title claimant rights to the Boddington exploration and development envelope, the CPA ensures that Newmont establishes appropriate management and protection of cultural heritage, while also providing GKB community members the opportunity to benefit from the mine.

This collaborative agreement has formalized Newmont’s commitment to the traditional landowners and is helping create a more diverse workforce in our mines through structured programming such as the Gnaala Work Ready (GWR) Program. The GWR Program provides GKB Native Title Claimants exposure to a number of mining operation positions while they take classes to earn a Certificate II in Resource Infrastructure Qualification.

Since its inception, the GWR Program has produced 80 graduates. In November 2016, the ninth iteration of the GWR Program held a graduation ceremony and luncheon for seven trainees, each of whom have since been offered and transitioned into permanent employment contracts within their respective departments at Boddington.

While the GWR Program works to provide hands-on training and work preparation, the Indigenous Cultural Protocols Leadership Development Program that is being piloted on site is helping management identify and remove barriers to inclusion. This leadership-training program targeted at the supervisor level aims to foster an environment where employees engage collaboratively and respectfully with one another.
