Our Approach to People: How We’re Seeking to Build an Inclusive, Safe and Healthy Culture

In our annual sustainability report, Beyond the Mine, launched April 15, we reaffirm our commitment to people and outline how we are building a culture where employees, partners and communities can thrive.

Last year, female representation in Newmont’s global workforce was 15 percent – notably higher than the International Women in Mining’s industry estimate of 10 percent. We also met or surpassed targets for local employment at our operations.

We added three new business resource groups (BRGs), for a global total of 24. Each BRG rallies members around a shared goal: to create a sense of belonging and develop approaches to support our inclusion and diversity strategy.

Conducted at least every two years, global internal surveys are a vital ingredient for our long-term success, and they help ensure we deliver on what matters most to our employees.

Results from the 2018 survey indicate that Newmont and its people have shared attitudes about safety, sustainability and environmental stewardship. We learned that additional focus is needed on supporting skills development and career advancement opportunities – areas that we are currently addressing.

Creating opportunities for employees to engage in open and honest conversation helps to provide insight into our performance, and such conversation often highlights areas where we can do better in creating value and improving lives through sustainable and responsible mining.
