Newmont Ghana and UMaT Collaborate to Support Education in Ghana
Tarkwa, February 16, 2010 – Newmont Ghana Gold Limited and the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa (UMaT), today announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) through which Newmont Ghana Gold Limited is donating US$500,000 (GHc717,000) as a contribution to the cost of acquisition and installation of a fire suppression and security surveillance systems at the University.
The MOU, which was signed today, is part of a wider collaboration between the two parties in promoting mutual interest within the sphere of education for students and for the Ghanaian mining industry.
Professor Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, Vice Chancellor of UMaT said the University was committed to judiciously using the donation by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited for the intended purpose.
“We are happy about this collaboration with Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. The $500,000 donation will go a long way to protect the critical infrastructure and equipment of the University”, Professor Mireku-Gyimah said.
Jeff Huspeni, Senior Regional Vice President-African Operations said the donation forms part of the company’s greater commitment to Ghana. Newmont Ghana is committed to strengthening educational systems and building capacity in our own workforce, host communities and broader knowledge sharing and education locally, regionally and nationally. Education is a cornerstone to long-term and sustainable economic development and mining is a key contributor to Ghana’s future growth.
“Since Newmont began operating in Ghana in 2006, we have committed over US$20 million to a variety of educational causes in the country”, he said.
“This includes over $12 million dollars investment in vocational and technical skills training, and about US$500,000 to development of educational infrastructure within our host communities”, Mr. Huspeni added.
UMaT and Newmont Ghana look forward to more of such mutually beneficial collaborations in future.
