Newmont Appoints VP Global Communications


DENVER, August 18, 2005 – Newmont Mining Corporation (NYSE: NEM) today announced the
appointment of Deb Witmer to Vice President, Global Communications. In the newly created
position, Witmer will be responsible for leading the development and implementation of a
strategic public affairs plan to enhance Newmont's communications with diversified stakeholders.
Prior to joining Newmont, Witmer served as Vice President, US External Affairs for Shell Oil
Company and Vice President, Public Affairs for Duke Energy Global Markets. Witmer holds a
bachelor of arts degree from the University of Florida and a master of business administration
from Pepperdine University. Witmer brings global experience working with a broad range of
multicultural constituencies in the oil and gas, power and chemical industries. Witmer will report
to Pierre Lassonde, President.
