Supporting sustainable development in our host communities through skills training and education is a crucial part of Newmont’s strategy. Through our investment programs, we strive to build long-term relationships with the people who contribute to the success of our business.
As part of an ongoing series, we will introduce you to some of the people who have benefited from Yanacocha’s community investment programs. Through their stories of success, we strive to inspire others to pursue self-determined development.
Meet Alex García Guevara. The eldest of two brothers, Alex has become an education ambassador in his hometown of Chanta Alta. Along with thousands of other children, Alex participates in Promotion of Reading, a program that inspires teachers and students to promote the pleasure of reading in their communities.
Sponsored by Yanacocha, Promotion of Reading has, to date, distributed more than 51,000 books to 279 schools, benefiting over 25,000 students. Additionally, the program teaches children fundamental skills in journalism and broadcasting.
Promotion of Reading has given Alex a renewed love of learning. “Since this project started, I’ve enjoyed reading even more,” he says. “My parents always guide me to keep on studying and to be someone in life.”
